The steps in the changing criterion design must be large enough to clearly show the effects of the independent variable, but not so large that the subject cannot meet the changed criterion. Guyatt and colleagues also investigated the minimum duration of treatment necessary to detect an effect [5]. Visual analysis of the time-series data revealed that medication effects were apparent within about 1–2 weeks of exposure, making a 4-week trial unnecessary.

V. Chapter 5: Experimental Research

If there is a trend in the direction of the anticipated treatment effect during baseline, or if there is too much variability, the ability to detect a treatment effect will be compromised. Thus, stability, or in some cases a trend in the direction opposite the predicted treatment effect, is desirable during baseline conditions. During development and testing of a new intervention, our methods should be efficient, flexible, and rigorous. We would like efficient methods to help us establish preliminary efficacy, or “clinically significant patient improvement over the course of treatment” [12] (p. 137). We also need flexible methods to test different parameters or components of an intervention. Just as different doses of a drug treatment may need to be titrated to optimize effects, different parameters or components of a behavioral treatment may need to be titrated to optimize effects.

Data Analysis in Single-Subject Research

Let's explore the similarities, differences, and considerations when choosing the right design for your study. This approach delivers treatments that usually last for several hours each day. A therapist or behavior technician works with the individual for at least several hours each week and often in different contexts, such as in both home and school settings.

VISUAL, STATISTICAL, AND SOCIAL VALIDITY ANALYSIS

Excessive variability is a relative term, which is typically determined by a comparison of performance within and between conditions (e.g., between baseline and intervention conditions) in a single-case experiment. The mere presence of variability does not mean that a single-case approach should be abandoned, however. Indeed, identifying the sources of variability and/or assessing new measurement strategies can be evaluated using SCDs. Under these conditions, the outcome of interest is not an increase or a decrease in some behavior or symptom but a reduction in variability. Once accomplished, the researcher has not only learned something useful but is also better prepared to evaluate the effects of an intervention to increase or decrease some health behavior.

OPTIMIZATION METHODS AND SINGLE-CASE DESIGNS

Visuals also help individuals on the spectrum understand what’s coming next on their schedule. Many clients will rely on visual support to help manage their anxiety and stress levels. This can result in more appropriate behavior over time and a reduction in tantrums.

These designs are also referred to as interrupted time-series designs [1] and stepped wedge designs [7]. SCDs include an array of methods in which each participant, or case, serves as his or her own control. Although these methods are conceptually rooted in the study of cognition and behavior [14], they are theory-neutral and can be applied to any health intervention. In a typical study, some behavior or symptom is measured repeatedly during all conditions for all participants.

Multiple-Baseline Design Across Settings

Figure 3 presents simplified examples of these two possibilities using a reversal design and short data streams (adapted from [69]). The panel on the left shows additive effects, and the panel on the right shows multiplicative effects. The data also can be analyzed to determine whether each component is necessary and sufficient to produce behavior change.

The dependent variable ranges between 10 and 15 units during the baseline, then has a sharp decrease to 7 units when treatment is introduced. However, the dependent variable increases to 12 units soon after the drop and ranges between 8 and 10 units until the end of the study. Specifically, the researcher waits until the participant’s behaviour in one condition becomes fairly consistent from observation to observation before changing conditions.

The repeated measures, and resulting time-series data, that are inherent to all SCDs (e.g., reversal and multiple-baseline designs) make them useful designs to conduct parametric analyses. For example, two doses of a medication, low versus high, labeled B and C, respectively, could be assessed using a reversal design [67]. There may be several possible sequences to conduct the assessment such as ABCBCA or ABCABCA. If C is found to be more effective of the two, it might behoove the researcher to replicate this condition using an ABCBCAC design. A multiple baseline across participants could also be conducted to assess the two doses, one dose for each participant, but this approach may be complicated by individual variability in medication effects. Instead, the multiple-baseline approach could be used on a within-subject basis, where the durations of not just the baselines but of the different dose conditions are varied across participants [68].

In some cases, the source(s) of variability can be identified and potentially mitigated (e.g., variability could be reduced by automating data collection, standardizing the setting and time for data collection). However, there may be instances when there is too much variability during baseline conditions, and thus, detecting a treatment effect will not be feasible. There are no absolute standards to define what “too much” variability means [27].

She’s credited with spearheading change in the areas of public health and education, fair labor practices, free speech, and immigrants’ rights, and is still recognized today as a tireless advocate for the poor and a courageous social reformer. Many of these women would rise to become prominent and influential reformers at all levels. Under such leadership, Hull House and many of its residents fostered an acute political awareness, advocating for legislative reforms at the municipal, state, and federal levels. Priorities included child labor laws, women's suffrage, and immigration policies. Among their greatest success, Hull House residents helped to launch the Immigrants Protective League, the Juvenile Protective Association, and the Institute for Juvenile Research. She was a social justice progressive urging Americans to become more equal, cooperative, peaceful, and kind. Instead of giving in to neurasthenia, she traveled from Cedarville to Chicago intent on improving the lives of the immigrant poor. She urged Americans to consider the factory workers who endured long hours with low wages—and to pay attention to the children who, instead of being at work, should have been in school. In 1931, Jane Addams became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and she continued her work at Hull House until her death in 1935.

Laura Jane Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois, in 1860 on the eve of the Civil War. Tucked into the northwest corner of Illinois, Cedarville, in Jane’s memory, was a place of rural beauty. Jane’s father, John H. Addams, owned a flour mill and a sawmill. President of a bank and director of two railroad companies, he was elected Illinois state senator in 1854 and served eight terms. He was an abolitionist, a Quaker, and a friend of Abraham Lincoln, whose photographs hung in his parlor and study.

Hull-House opened a boarding home for girls, without chaperon or “lady board of managers.” Many of the neighbors came to the center for weekly baths. After the death of co-founder Jane Addams, Hull House continued to serve the community around the Halsted location until its displacement by the urban campus of the University of Illinois. The philanthropic efforts of the original Hull House settlement continue to be performed throughout the city at various locations under the Jane Addams Hull House Association. As founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr, the main purpose of Hull House was to provide social and educational opportunities for working class people within the urban Chicago neighborhood, many of whom were recent immigrants to Chicago’s Near West Side. Addams returned to Europe, this time to Zurich to preside over the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, attended by some 150 delegates from 16 countries.

A hero worshipper, she always remained in awe of her father and his hero, Abraham Lincoln. According to her stepmother, Jane was like her father, fiercely ambitious. Maternal, she kept track of and took care of her extended family. Simultaneously, she thought of women as fundamentally different from men, even superior—compassionate and intuitive—the keepers of home, the protectors of children, the preservers of peace. To have significant impact, however, Addams realized that Hull-House needed to be more than a cultural and community center. The settlement started with a kindergarten, then added a day-care center, then an art studio. The early residents, who lived in the house to help the community, held reading groups and sewing classes. They also delivered babies, nursed the sick, prepared the dead for burial, and, from time to time, sheltered young women from abuse. The settlement house was modeled on that of Toynbee Hall in London, where the residents were men; Addams intended it to be a community of women residents, though some men were also residents over the years.

Addams read Leo Tolstoy’s My Religion, in which the great novelist confessed his personal failure and his commitment to Christian service and nonviolence, describing how he had found purpose and satisfaction living with peasants. She traveled by horse-drawn omnibus to London’s impoverished East End and visited Toynbee Hall, an English settlement house, where Oxford and Cambridge graduates lived and worked among the destitute. After attending a bullfight in Spain in 1888 with a close friend, Ellen Gates Starr, Addams confided her dream that together they would plant a replica of Toynbee Hall amid the tenements of Chicago. In addition to her work at the Hull House, Addams began serving on Chicago's Board of Education in 1905, later chairing its the School Management Committee. Five years later, in 1910, she became the first female president of the National Conference of Charities and Corrections (later renamed the National Conference of Social Work).

Hull House took its name from the original mansion built by real estate developer Charles J. Hull in 1856. At one time located in a prestigious part of Chicago, by 1889 Halsted Street had descended into squalor in part due to the rapid and over-whelming influx of immigrants into the Near West Side neighborhood. In its dilapidation, Charles Hull granted his former home to niece Helen Culver, who in turn granted it to Addams on a 25-year rent-free lease. Sociologist Erik Schneiderhan notes the striking parallels between Addams and Barack Obama, who has cited “Jane Addams toiling in a Chicago settlement home” as an inspiration. A young, idealistic Obama sought purpose as a community organizer on Chicago’s South Side as did Jane Addams in the Nineteenth Ward. Jane Addams and Hull House were pioneers of social reform in the United States. Addams’ efforts, both through Hull House and independently, laid groundwork for women’s rights, children’s rights, workers’ rights, and education still felt today. Settlement houses were established on the principles of Christian Socialism and the Social Gospel, which held the belief that the application of social sciences could address the challenges faced by urban residents in industrialized societies. Consequently, she mobilized teams to investigate social problems in the vicinity of Hull-House. Hull-House gradually expanded to include about a dozen other buildings used for classes and clubs, a nursery school, the only public library in the neighborhood, a playground and one of the first gymnasiums in the country.

The majority of its original buildings were demolished, but the Hull residence itself was preserved as a monument to Jane Addams. Others study her oratory, writing style, and changing religious beliefs. Alice Hamilton fulfilled Jane Addams’s dream by graduating, in 1893, from the University of Michigan’s medical school. Living on and off at Hull-House in the 1890s, Hamilton attempted to identify causes of typhoid and tuberculosis in the surrounding community, became an expert on lead poisoning, and went on to have an exceptional career in public health. Florence Kelley, an avowed socialist, and her three children fled from her abusive husband to Hull-House. Upset with the long hours of working women, Kelley took legislators on tours of sweatshops.

She worked for protective legislation for children and women and advocated for labour reforms. She strove for justice for immigrants and African Americans, and she favoured women’s suffrage. Faderman describes Jane as "probably the first to take the work of female social scientists seriously."[27] She was one of the founding members of the American Sociological Association, established in 1905.

Jane revered her father, characterizing him as “a man who held converse with great minds.” He introduced her to books, such as Thomas Carlyle’s On Heroes and Hero Worship, and insisted on the best education for his children. As part of her commitment to finding an end to war, Addams served as president of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom from to 1929. For her efforts, she shared the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize with Nicholas Murray Butler, an educator and presidential advisor.

In 1910 she became the first woman president of the National Conference of Social Work, and in 1912 she played an active part in the Progressive Party’s presidential campaign for Theodore Roosevelt. At The Hague in 1915 she served as chairman of the International Congress of Women, following which was established the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. She was also involved in the founding of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920.

She went on to establish the National Federation of Settlements the following year, holding that organization's top post for more than two decades thereafter. In 1963, the construction of the University of Illinois' Chicago campus forced Hull House to move its headquarters, and, unfortunately, most of the organization's original buildings were demolished as a result. However, the Hull residence was transformed into a monument honoring Addams that remains standing today. When the buildings and land were sold to the university, the Hull House Association dispersed into multiple locations around Chicago. The Hull House Association closed in 2012 due to financial difficulties with a changing economy and federal program requirements; the museum, unconnected to the Association, remains in operation. The establishment of the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois in 1963 forced the Hull House Association to relocate its headquarters.

Recognizing certain similarities within the United States, Addams and Starr were at once inspired to launch a similar program within urban Chicago. Upon their return to the United States, Addams and Starr established America’s first settlement organization, naming it Hull House after the abandoned Hull Mansion which they acquired on Halsted Street. Motivated to physically improve the putrid conditions of her neighborhood, Jane Addams (pictured here in 1896) arranged to have a garbage incinerator installed at Hull-House and was appointed inspector of garbage in 1895. Addams and her colleagues at Hull-House were not the only critics of poverty during the Gilded Age and the Progressive era. Henry George’s 1879 denunciation of class division, Progress and Poverty, sold millions of copies worldwide. Edward Bellamy’s 1888 novel, Looking Backward, imagined Boston in the year 2000 where a benevolent government provided universal prosperity and equality.

Kelley was recruited by the state’s new governor, John Peter Altgeld, as the chief factory inspector, and two other women involved in the research, Alzina Stevens and Mary Kenney, also became inspectors. A movement followed in which more than one hundred similar organizations were established nationwide by 1900. By 1911, Chicago itself was home to more than 35 settlement organizations.

Eventually the settlement included 13 buildings and a playground, as well as a camp near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Many prominent social workers and reformers—Julia Lathrop, Florence Kelley, and Grace and Edith Abbott—came to live at Hull House, as did others who continued to make their living in business or the arts while helping Addams in settlement activities. Hull-House Residents made countless strides toward public health reform in Chicago’s 19th Ward, from establishing the city’s first public baths to introducing the first child labor legislation in the state. In our less reticent age, skeptical of affectionate female friendships, there is speculation among historians about their relationship. Not always serious and priggish, Jane could also be irreverent, even naughty. In her autobiography, she confesses that she and some classmates at the seminary read Confessions of an English Opium-Eater by Thomas De Quincey and even went so far as to imitate the author. Hoping to understand De Quincey’s dreams more deeply, Jane and her friends drugged themselves with opium during a long holiday.
